CST Staff and Cadre

Scott Sonnon was born on October 11, 1969, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Upon starting school, teachers said that Scott was unlikely to succeed at anything. From an early age, he became "legally" blind due to myopia and eventually Thygeson's disease. He spent his youth crippled in pain with what doctors could only describe as Osteochondrosis disease, shredding the connective tissue throughout his joints and weakening the development of his growth plates. When he first began "mirror-image" writing, he was labeled as "retarded" by undereducated teachers from his suffering an array of learning disabilities such as dysphonetic, dyseidetic and "double deficit" dyslexia. But as Scott will say, these "defects" were a blessing which allowed him to see, feel and think about the world in a wonderfully unique way.

Despite incredible obstacles, his trek across the world learning alternative methods of health improvement led him to become a USA National Sambo Team Coach and Champion earning him the former USSR's highest athletic distinction: Honourable Master of Sport. His personal success led him to become subject matter expert for members of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the National Hockey League, National Football League and Major League Baseball. Despite mental obstacles, he currently serves on Graduate Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University and has earned his membership into Mensa - the International High IQ Society.

His love for helping others improve their quality of movement, health and life was born out of his need to learn each remedial step, of never being able to take for granted what came naturally to everyone else. But due to poor nutrition, conditioning and aging, now children and seniors alike suffer pain similar to what Scott encountered and overcame. Once an adjunct Professor of Physical Education for Penn State University, his programs were originally designed to prevent accelerating aging of joint and connective tissues, and to give people of even Scott's genetic challenges, access to the physical and psychological mastery which can only be described as "flow."

Now known around the world as The Flow Coach™, he has become an inspiration to thousands of people by his incredible story of triumph and his passionate dedication to helping others. As a world-acclaimed public speaker and author, has taken his world-class fighting skills off the mat to the fight against the core issues behind childhood obesity and the accelerated aging leading to arthritis. Scott serves as fitness advisor to organizations such as the International Youth Conditioning Association, the National Active Aging Council, the Radiant Recovery® Ranch, the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival, the National Strength Conditioning Association, the National Law Enforcement and Security Institute, and has spoken at esteemed institutions such as Wake Forest, Dickinson, and Western Washington Universities.

Despite Physical and Mental Challenges,
Scott Sonnon earned USSR's Highest Athletic Distinction:
The Honourable Master of Sport.

Scott will tell you that his greatest achievement had nothing to do with himself, though. He explains that we cannot do alone, what can be achieved together. He assembled a "think-tank round-table" of experts from various fields around the world. Founding the RMAX Faculty and Coaching Staff, Scott surrounded himself with a powerhouse team of doctors, therapists, explorers, writers, and leaders from industries outside of fitness. As a child, he dreamed that it would be possible, but at his speaking engagements you will regularly hear him gush with pride at the cadre that has formed to bring his work to the people around the world who need it most.

Scott's array of patented equipment - such as the Clubbell® - have become legendary in their unique effectiveness. His Circular Strength Training System® and the global wellness society known as RMAX International can now be found in 58 countries worldwide and counting, earning Scott a place in the National Fitness Hall of Fame Museum and the Personal Trainer Hall of Fame.

Ryan Hurst is the newest addition to the RMAX Faculty Coaching Staff and is the representative for RMAX/CST Asia.

Ryan competed in gymnastics from a very young age, a sport which he continued throughout highschool. In Junior High, while also practicing gymnastics, he started Aikido and became fascinated with the Japanese culture.

A desire to further his education in the martial arts and the Japanese language led Ryan to travel to Japan while in university. He stayed in Japan and continued his training in Osaka. During his first long stay in the country, while at the University of Niigata, he lived with his Kendo instructor as an 'uchi-deshi' or 'live-in (Martial Art) pupil'. His practices included weekly meetings and bouts with members of the Niigata Police force and Japan Self Defense Force. It was through hard work with these people that Ryan earned his black belt rankings in Kendo and Iaido, and first began training in Judo.

Also while at university, Ryan was introduced to the practice of Raja Yoga. Yoga became an extremely important part of Ryan's life, and he devoted daily practice to the asanas and meditation in order to advance himself physically and, more importantly, mentally. Ryan would later discover how important that yoga practice was in helping him cope with the intense stress of the hustle and bustle of life in Osaka and the corporate world.

Having graduated from university, Ryan moved to Osaka to continue his Martial Art practice. He dove head first into Judo while working at the Sumiyoshi Budokan (Sumiyoshi Martial Art Complex), located at the Sumiyoshi Shrine. At this time Ryan also worked with instructors in Kendo, Daito-Ryu Aiki-jujitsu and Shorinji-Kenpo. However, it was Judo that consumed the better part of his practice time, and through his contacts at the Sumiyoshi Budokan he also practiced with police officers at Osaka Castle (Shudo-kan) and at the Minatoku Police Station. His black belt rankings in Judo were all earned through winning at tournaments as a representative of the Minatoku Police Station's Judo club, Minatoku Ju-yu Kai.

Ryan was first introduced to Scott Sonnon's material through the original Grappler's Toolbox. He was intrigued by the video and used it to help him with his martial art practice, but it wasn't until he suffered a serious shoulder dislocation that he fully came to understand the beauty of CST - how it can help a person in recovering full range of motion while also working towards the prevention of injury.

Ryan released the Japanese version of Intu-Flow®, Joint Wellness, in 2005. In 2006, in collaboration with Head Coach Jarlo Ilano, he released the Prasara Primer textbook, and in 2007 followed it up with the Prasara Primer DVD. Ryan has appeared in multiple magazines and has been featured on GAORA Sports Station conducting a bi-weekly show that features Prasara Body-Flow Yoga. In August of 2008 Ryan released Yoga-For-Men.com, an online portal where guys can learn yoga like a real man should.

Ryan specializes in complete body transformation, instructing in both Japanese and English at his private studio in Osaka. He also offers personalized online programs to his students around the world. Ryan also trains several Japanese media stars, and his monthly workshops are filled with people who travel in from all parts of Japan.

Brandon Jones began his martial arts training in 1979, at the age of 8. He spent an itinerant youth searching from art to art until finally devoting himself to the study of Kung Fu San Soo. He also began training in boxing and Muay Thai. He sparred with former champion Kathy Long while training for the Golden Gloves, and he competed in over 30 amateur fights, both sanctioned and unsanctioned, winning 9 of those fights by knockout.

After moving to San Francisco, Brandon began training with Prof. Ralph Castro in Shaolin Kenpo, while also pursuing studies in Tae Kwon Do and Hwarang Do. He eventually relocated again, this time to Los Angeles to train with Sifu James McNeil, a highly respected Chinese martial artist.

In Los Angeles Brandon was first introduced to the internal martial arts, including Xingyiquan, Chen Style Taijiquan, several esoteric forms of Iron Body and Iron Palm, Five Animal Shaolin and Splashing Hands Kung Fu. He dedicated himself full-time to the practice, and several years later opened one of the first charter schools in Northern California. He also continued to broaden his training with masters in the arts of Shotokan Karate, Uechi-Ryu Karate, Burmese Bando and others, earning multiple black belts and instructor certifications.

After several years spent running a large martial art school full-time, Brandon decided that a change was in order. He wanted to continue his studies of human combat while testing his decades of accumulated skill in realms outside the sportive ring. He decided to enlist in the United States Navy with the intention of becoming a Navy SEAL. He spent 8 months of preparation time training full-time towards this goal. Upon enlistment, he topped out the military entry exams and was convinced to accept the job of Cryptologic Technician. He was only informed later that this classification disqualified him from SEAL training due to its rarity and specialization.

Brandon was assigned to the USS Valley Forge and served in the Persian Gulf War. He spent the remainder of his 6 years of service visiting exotic tourist destinations like Ecuador, Panama, Colombia, and Bahrain. He was also recommended for BUDs Instructor duty despite not being a SEAL.

Brandon attended his first instructor training with Scott Sonnon in 1999, became a graduate of the first Circular Strength Training Instructor seminar (Alpha Cadre), and has attended nearly every certification since.

As a Faculty Head Coach, Brandon has applied his extensive martial arts and boxing background to the creation of RMAX FlowFighting, an effort which garnered him and the other four members of the RMAX Faculty acceptance into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2008, Brandon was appointed Director of RMAX FlowFighting by Founder Scott Sonnon, and took over sole responsibility for the continued development of that system.

Brandon is the author of Going Ballistic: Circular Strength Training for Boxing, star and creator of the acclaimed RMAX Powered Internal Martial Arts Vol. 1 DVD, and creator of the soon-to-be-released FlowBox book and DVD series. He works with UFC fighters, professional kickboxers, a British super-heavyweight stickfighting champion, law enforcement officers, and athletes from a wide variety of non-combat sports.

Brandon now operates 690 Martial Arts and Fitness, the worlds first fully-operating RMAX International training facility, in Moorpark, California. You can learn more here: 690 Gym and World's Premier RMAX Gym.

He certifies CST Instructors and Coaches, conducts seminars worldwide, and works with a wide range of private clients including international rock stars like Jim Gillette of Nitro, guitar diva Lita Ford, and Steve Kilbey of The Church.

In addition to his work with RMAX, Ryan regularly puts his training to the test in some of the world's most unforgiving places as a widely published travel writer. This pursuit has taken him to 45 countries, including Mongolia, Nicaragua, and North Korea, by Russian jeep, motorcycle, dugout canoe, horse and camel. He is an Associate Editor of Outpost Magazine, Canada's national travel magazine. In 2006 his article "Taklamakan: The Worst Desert in the World" was nominated for a National Magazine Award in Canada.

Joe Wilson, International Champion, Holding His Childhood Leg Braces
At The Police Academy Where He Now Teaches Thousands To Be Fit!

Joe Wilson was born on August 26, 1975 in Memphis, TN. During delivery he turned which caused his birth to be a high forceps delivery (A dangerous delivery method which is now not practiced in U.S. because of the birth defects it caused) . This caused nerve damage to the optic nerves. Later in life this would cause his eyes to “jump” and slight problems with his eyesight.

He was born with a torsional deformity in his hip and his feet. This cause his feet to be “Pigeon toed” so badly that he had to wear leg braces and corrective shoes until he was 12. Even at 13 he was told by doctors that he would never be able to run or participate in normal athletics.

As a child these challenges and deformities caused Joseph to feel different than average kids. He spent hours and hours alone in his room while other kids played outside. Listening to doctors and medical professionals led him to feel as though he could not keep up with other kids which became a self-fulfilling prophecy. He endured years of being the slowest and the last, not to mention the last to get picked for sports and games. At 13, Joseph’s life and perspective changed when problems at home led him to spend most days and nights in solitude. The time alone in contemplation led him to visualize what he could do almost constantly. With no one around to remind him of what he could not do, he began to overcome the challenges bit by bit. The physical challenges he faced forced him to work harder than most and look for ways to improve in places where most kids his age had not, or would not look. He would literally train day and night, as well as read and study everything he could get his hands that pertained to fitness, martial arts and self-development.

Joe Wilson on the Great Wall of China

Joseph began his martial arts training at 4 years of age and has been training actively ever since, now holding black belt distinction and teaching certifications in several martial arts and yoga disciplines. His dedication took him across the ocean to the famed Shaolin Temple in China, where he was accepted as a student and personally trained by the monks. And to share that experience with others, Joseph has operated a successful martial arts school for 15 years.

Joseph had achieved success as a martial arts school owner, teacher and a competitor and wanted to face new fears and new challenges. Growing up in Memphis, he faced the reality of being a target of violence, and witnessing crime in action most of his life. Joseph always romanticized the idea of being a police officer and being one who could protect and help others. Of course, for years he didn't believe he could do it simply from the standpoint of his perceived limitations. However, after overcoming physical and mental barriers that he never thought he would transcend, Joseph decided to tackle this huge challenge. He has always believed that being a Police officer is one of the noblest professions. So at 21, he scaled down his business, dropped out of college (for a period of time) and applied and was accepted to the academy. For the over 10 years, Joseph has been a full time law enforcement officer, internal affairs detective, POST certified instructor in a variety of subjects, and considered a "Use of Force Expert" in many States and Countries.

Despite physical challenges and advice from “experts” to never exercise he was able to become a Multi-discipline International champion and teacher, and accomplished author and speaker and a highly sought after law enforcement and protective services trainer.

Joe Wilson teahing Monks at the Shaolin Temple

Joseph credits the Circular Strength Training System and Scott Sonnon with his full recovery and helping him overcome perceived limits that were forced upon him by others, which have earned him entrance into the National Fitness Hall of Fame Museum and Personal Trainer Hall of Fame.

His greatest joy comes from teaching and helping others, which can be seen in his zealous drive teaching thousands of police officers, martial artists and fitness enthusiasts through his department, his martial arts schools and RMAX international. He continues to appear and speak on topics such as Personal Safety and Self Protection, Health and Fitness, Cultural Diversity, Goal Setting, Anger management and martial arts. He feels proud to name a few of his higher profile clients such as Fed Ex, International Paper, the City of Memphis, City of Memphis Board of Education, City of Memphis Public Schools, Shelby County Government, Harbor House Recovery Center, Serenity House Recovery Center, Shelby County Public Schools, Lions Club, Cargill Industry Corporation, Memphis Police Department, Memphis Fire Department, Memphis Fire Museum, Iowa State Police, University of Memphis, Rhodes College, Stanford University, Radford University, Balley Fitness, as well as an ongoing list of children's groups and senior citizen centers.

Joseph feels a deep moral obligation to giving others the opportunities he has found and made; and has dedicated his life to teaching others to reach their full potential mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and socially. Now, Joseph writes, travels and speaks to excited audiences of thousands throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
